Jungle Home

Luxury residence, Chennai, India

Situated in a quiet but prime residential neighbourhood in Chennai, this bungalow for a couple and their three daughters is built with a generous vision of the future and their growing family. A private access leads one to a four storeyed building surrounded by coconut and mango trees that provide a natural limit to the structure. The home is grounded, where spaces are built to engage with the sun and the rain - a unity of the interior, landscape and the elements.

Each floor is centred around a shared living space, and is dedicated to different family members and different activities - from the bedrooms and functional spaces, to a home theatre, dance studio, jacuzzi, library, pooja room, office space, meditation hall and terrace dining spaces. All the shared spaces facing the front/east of the house have sweeping sliding foldable windows that open onto planters - bringing the outside inside. These plants populate the facade, climbing, hanging and growing to become a part of it. All rooms have similar openings, flooding the house with daylight and air.

The facade is wrapped in linear brick and local granite, while the interiors are hued with lime pigmented with the leaves of the mango tree, natural stone and wood - all lending an earthy demeanour. It is also home to a collection of quintessential Indian objects and artefacts, reflecting the family’s connections to Rajasthan and love for the arts. The home is a space of no compromise - every material, every detail, and every experience has been carefully crafted and tuned to a sense of nature, culture and luxury, rooted in a quiet Indian-ness.
