Conservation of a Historic Haveli

Refurbishment of a Heritage Haveli, Khichan, Rajasthan, India

The project is an old Rajasthani haveli built a few centuries ago, situated in the rural village of Khichan, two hours from Jodhpur. The 5000 sqft home is split over three levels - semi basement, ground and first with a terrace, laid out and constructed in a typical manner suited to the style of living from its time. It is abutted by a large open space which was previously used as a cow shelter and an iron factory.

The haveli was painstakingly erected as part of a rich family legacy, engaging local craftsmen who worked mainly with the materials of the region - stone, lime and wood - to build this entirely by hand. Solid stone walls, intricate stone carvings, stone jaalis, lime floors and walls, and exquisitely detailed wooden doors and windows highlight the artisanal workmanship of the time. The haveli is laid out as a cluster of rooms around a central inner courtyard, while the periphery is open on all four sides, allowing the multitude of doors and windows to bring air and light inside. The basement is used for storage, while the terrace allows a cool space of relief during hot summer nights. Even today, rainwater is collected in an underground tank and can be used for drinking. The first image is a visualisation. The rest are of the existing condition.

Over time and years of use, the space has weathered and needs to be restored not only to its original glory, but also retrofitted to be comfortably inhabited with the needs of today. This daunting undertaking is led by a deep respect for the existing fabric. The refurbishment is underway using local artisans and materials to restore and craft a new unique identity to this architectural heritage and legacy.

Looking back at the past always reveals a path for the future. The best stories of India are told in those moments.
