Retreat by the River

Luxury home, Raipur, India

The project is situated on a lush green site of 1.4 acres by the river Kharun, on the outskirts of Raipur. The generous brief for a family of five included: five bedrooms with attached jacuzzis and outdoor showers, a spa room, living and dining+kitchen areas, a yoga hall, a professional badminton court, a large swimming pool, a fruit garden and a cow shelter, all serviced by the staff and utility quarters.

The mix of such an extravagant brief on a most picturesque site with a view of the river, demanded a design response that was steeped in luxury while being grounded and close to nature. The idea is to create an architecture of value, which is timeless and connected with its surroundings, responding to the natural elements - Air, Water and Light. The entire home is elevated on a plinth with a shaded colonnaded verandah wrapped around it. The centre of the home is Water. A well in the central courtyard acts as the focal point around which all spaces interact. Trees give shade to the courtyard inside, as well as outside the home. Thick loadbearing walls are punctuated with multiple doors and windows that keep the home open to Air and Light. Adjacent to the main house is a smaller courtyard around which the yoga hall, badminton court and staff quarters are situated. Outside, it is a short walk to the cow shelter, and the deck amidst the fruit garden, where one can sit and enjoy an evening tea overlooking the river.

The home is designed as a medium to celebrate the simplest moments of life - enjoying a cool breeze on a hot summer day, sharing a meal under the shade of a tree, a refreshing swim with a view of the river, or even sleeping under the stars at night. As nature takes over, the home takes a life of its own with time, always remaining a place of joy.
